I sold my first number plate when I was 19.
What stuck with me wasn’t just the sale. It was who bought it.
A company.
That was the moment I first realised that private registrations weren’t only about names, initials and personal vanity. There was another market sitting there — businesses.
I didn’t properly return to number plates for years, but when I did, I started looking at them differently.
Instead of asking:
“What registration would look good on my car?”
I started asking:
“What registration could actually help a business get noticed?”
That thinking eventually became UBR Plates — Unique Business Registration Plates.
And the plate I’d put alongside this article?
CA11 UBR.
Because that really sums up what UBR Plates is about.
Your initials are nice. But can they bring you a customer?
Everybody loves a personal plate.
Dave wants DAVE.
Pete wants PETE.
Someone else wants their initials, birthday or nickname.
Nothing wrong with that at all.
But if you’re still building your business, there might be something more useful to put on the car first.
Ask yourself:
Is a plate with my initials going to get me my next enquiry?
Will somebody sitting behind me at the traffic lights know what I actually do?
Probably not.
But imagine you’re an estate agent and you arrive at a property valuation with a memorable property-related registration.
The car is sitting outside while you’re inside talking to the homeowner.
Someone walks past.
Someone drives past.
A neighbour notices it.
The registration itself reinforces what the company does.
Add your normal vehicle branding, website address or a QR code saying “Book Your Valuation”, and suddenly the car is doing more than getting you from A to B.
It’s working.
The number plate can become part of your marketing
That’s the whole idea behind a Word Plate.
It doesn’t replace your advertising.
It doesn’t replace Google Ads.
It doesn’t replace social media.
It certainly doesn’t replace good SEO.
It works with all of them.
Businesses already spend money getting themselves noticed through websites, SEO, paid advertising, social media, vehicle wraps, signage, sponsorship and print.
So why should the number plate be the one part of the vehicle that says absolutely nothing about the business?
The right registration can become another piece of the marketing mix.
You drive it.
You park it.
People photograph it.
People share it.
People remember it.
And unlike an advert that disappears when the campaign ends, the registration can remain an asset you own.
Then SEO makes it even more interesting
Here’s something you can try.
Go to your favourite search engine and type:
BU57 LAV
or
LE57 TAX
and see what appears.
That’s where things get interesting.
With the right SEO, social media presence and consistent branding, somebody could see your registration on the road, remember it later and search for it.
Eventually, that search could lead them directly to your website, Google presence or social media.
Think about that customer journey:
They see the plate.
They remember the wording.
They Google it.
They find your business.
The plate creates the curiosity.
SEO helps them find you.
Your website or social media does the selling.
A registration can become a searchable part of your brand.
Imagine what that could mean in different industries
You’re a plumber.
One customer who sees the car could become a £5,000 bathroom refurbishment.
You’re a tax adviser.
One business client could pay you every month for years.
You install paint protection film.
One high-end vehicle job could cover a substantial part of the cost of the plate.
You’re an estate agent.
One instruction could generate thousands in commission.
You’re a funeral director.
A memorable relevant registration helps reinforce the name and identity of the business every time the vehicle is seen.
That’s why I’ve always thought differently about registrations.
I don’t just look at the letters and numbers.
I ask:
Who should own this?
What business could use it?
What could it communicate?
How memorable is it?
And most importantly:
Could it help make somebody money?
Your number plate is already there — make it work harder
Every road-going vehicle has to display a registration.
So if you run a business, why not think of that space as part of your brand?
Not instead of advertising.
Alongside it.
Your website works.
Your SEO works.
Your social media works.
Your vehicle graphics work.
And your Word Plate sits there reinforcing the message every single day.
It’s one more chance to be noticed.
One more chance to be remembered.
And potentially, one more route to a customer.
And what about the tax?
Where a registration is bought and genuinely used for business branding or promotional purposes, there may be tax or accounting considerations depending on the circumstances.
That doesn’t mean every business registration automatically becomes tax deductible, so always speak to your accountant about your particular situation.
But if your business already has a marketing budget, it certainly raises an interesting question:
Could part of that budget be working for you from the front and back of the company car?
Buy the dream plate later
My view is simple.
If you’re building a company, don’t necessarily rush to put your own name on the car.
Let the business plate come first.
Get the registration that gets attention.
Get the registration that helps people remember what you do.
Get the registration that complements your SEO, advertising and branding.
Let it help you generate enquiries.
Let it help you grow.
Then, when the business is successful enough…
let the business buy you the plate with your own name on it.
There’s your reward.
Because your name on a plate might make you smile.
But the right Word Plate could help pay for it.
UBR PLATES
Unique Business Registration Plates
Word Plates that get you noticed.
Your next customer could be right behind you. Make sure you’re in front of them.
And one more thought:
Your number plate should be part of your marketing mix — not just part of your car.
